View Full Version : Single Task - Multiple Project

I'm looking to find out if there is an existing workaround/resolution, or to submit the below as a possibility for future consideration:

Some of our clients are looking into maintaining multiple "views" of the task assignments. The best way to describe it is via an example:

Project ACME
Project Redhat
Project Microsoft

A single Task for Technical Support for the above 3 Projects... The task can be aggregated into 1 task in Project Information Management Services (or into 3 tasks in Project Information Management Services), but still visible and accessible in the other 3 projects.
So the final result would be:

Project ACME
__Task: ACME Technical Support
Project Redhat
__Task: Redhat Technical Support
Project Microsoft
__Task: Microsoft Technical Support
Project Information Management Services
__Task: (Dynamic) Technical Support
____Task: ACME Technical Support
____Task: Redhat Technical Support
____Task: Microsoft Technical Support

Additional: Time logs, etc. would also be duplicated linked between them, so if a user entered a timelog in Project ACME against that task, it would be added/visible on both Project ACME and on Project Information Management Services...

Would it be difficult to implement the above in the existing dotproject infrasture? or would this be considered an add-on?

Anyways, thanks all for your inputs in advance!

Mike

Currently every task appears in exactly one project.

I like the idea of being able to look at tasking across different projects and especially having cross project dependenicies.

What this would require is a way of linking any number of tasks to any number of projects and would require some significant changes to the backend and is a non-trivial effort both in terms of modification to the database, the code, and the upgrade process required for current users.

You can always copy tasks to other projects ...

Is there an easy way of doing this? I've seen "Move", but not copy.

The only down side of simply cloning all these tasks is that then there have to be manual updates of the information. Then again, if the alternative is not tracking the task at all, it's a simple choice.

There is always the organize task link (one of the crumbs on top in project/view

Ha! I hadn't noticed that. I guess I've gotten to the point where I move quickly through my things and don't even notice others.

Thanks!
